Moments of Joy: Denton’s 2024 Artsway Banners Bring Color and Connection to Market Street

DENTON, MD – For the second year running, the Denton Artsway is being transformed into a vibrant outdoor gallery with the return of the 2024 Mainstreet Banners Project. Twelve local artists have collaborated to create a striking display of colorful and community-driven banners, now hanging along Market Street. These 60-inch tall and 24-inch wide banners were installed on August 13th and will adorn downtown for the next 12 weeks, celebrating local culture, creativity, and resilience.

This year’s theme, “Moments of Joy”, highlights Denton’s spirit, showcasing the beauty, unity, and positivity that define our community. According to Megan Krizovensky, Program Coordinator for the Caroline County Council of Arts (CCCA), the banners are more than just artistic statements—they’re a celebration of resilience and connection.

“‘Moments of Joy’ emphasizes the strength of our community, celebrating everything from the natural beauty surrounding us to the small acts of kindness that bring us together,” said Krizovensky. “We wanted these banners to uplift, to remind us all of the joy that’s present even in tough times.”

All twelve artists used acrylic paint to bring their vision to life, and each banner has been sealed with polyurethane to withstand the elements. The lineup of artists includes: Yolanda Acree, Allie Bilbrough, Laurel Orendorf, Renee Pilarski, Jo Ebling, Kat Ebling, Ashley Christian, Lynn Cegelski, Kaitlyn McNeal, Rose Jeon, Kat Thompson, and Megan Krizovensky herself.

A significant part of making this project a reality comes from the generous support of local sponsors. Businesses such as Mainstreet Taxi, Pizza Empire, Kathleen Thompson with Benson & Mangold, Main Street Sweets, and Heather Yoc-Santos LLC played a crucial role in funding the project. A special banner has even been dedicated to Sue Simmons, honoring her invaluable contributions to the local arts community.

“Our goal is to bring more public art to Denton, enhancing the visual appeal of our downtown while also supporting the businesses that make it possible,” Krizovensky added. “It draws people in, boosts tourism, and helps support our local economy.”

The project doesn’t just beautify the town; it reinforces a core mission of the CCCA: to use art as a tool for community engagement and economic growth. By elevating local talent and adding visual interest to Market Street, the banners help create a space where creativity flourishes and businesses thrive.

The Artsway Banners Project is a testament to the resilience of Denton. As the community continues to navigate challenges, these banners serve as a reminder of the moments of joy that unite us all. Whether it’s through the vibrant hues of the artwork or the stories they tell, these banners will inspire hope and positivity in all who visit.

Be sure to keep an eye out for future updates, including details on an upcoming auction where you’ll have the opportunity to take home a piece of Denton’s artistic legacy.
