I use a variety of wood to create wall hangings, signs, etc. I have used scrap repurposed wood of various types, various shapes of basswood bought at a craft store, pine wood purchased from Lowes, and pine plaques that I found in my Aunt’s shed when I was cleaning it out to be sold. I prefer working with basswood, but I can’t turn down a free wood framed bed left over from a yard sale.

I started with a beginner burning pen before I really knew others existed. I now use a pen that has 5 interchangeable tips. Each tip serves a different purpose and can be used to create a variety of textures.

The important thing to remember is pyrography is not etching. Etching is done by a computer and can make multiple copies of each design. Pyrography is done with a very hot pen that burns the design into the wood. Each design is never done the same way more than once.
